– The earthquakes in Turkey and Syria are the worst natural disaster to hit a European country in almost 100 years. The situation in Turkey is deeply tragic and the needs are enormous. For It is natural for Norway to reach out to the country allied, says Bjørn Arild Gram.

It is the operational command of the Norwegian Armed Forces that coordinates the Norwegian contribution. Norway uses the SALIS arrangement to implement this assistance. The SALIS (Strategic Airlift Interim Solution) agreement is an international cooperation.

Efforts will be coordinated by the Euro-Atlantic Disaster Response Coordination Center (NATO EADRCC), NATO's primary civilian emergency response center.

To ensure the fast delivery of supplies, Norway will use the AN124 aircraft of the Ukrainian company Antonov Airlines. The AN124 aircraft is one of the largest transport aircraft in the world. The flight will be financed by Norway as part of its contribution to emergency response.

– The SALIS agreement means that we can quickly and efficiently send the necessary supplies and assistance to Turkey. Emergency aid includes tents for temporary shelter, medical equipment for treating injuries, and blankets to protect against the cold and the weather,” says Gram.

Norway worked closely with both the Turkish and Pakistani authorities to ensure the safe and efficient transport of emergency supplies.

“While Norway has limited strategic air transport capabilities, we ensure through international agreements that our needs are met. Using the agreements, the Norwegian Armed Forces now contribute directly to Norway's overall response to earthquake emergencies. We are pleased to be able to support the efforts in any way we can, says Lieutenant General Yngve Odlo, head of the Norwegian Armed Forces Operational Command.

“By working closely with NATO EARCC and affected countries, we are working to ensure that emergency stocks reach those who need them quickly,” says Odlo.

On February 11, the Norwegian Armed Forces sent a C-130J Hercules cargo plane to Turkey to help with the medical evacuation of the wounded and the transport of emergency aid after the massive earthquake that hit the country. This mission has been completed.
