– Our goal is to ensure that no one dies or is seriously injured in road traffic. That's why we are actively working to expose fraud to provide drivers with the theoretical knowledge they need to travel safely on the road, says Lill Tove Amundsen, department director at the Norwegian Roads Administration.

Last year, the Norwegian Road Administration detected 18 attempts to cheat on a theory test. The consequence is even a year of waiting for the next opportunity to take the exam.

– In ten cases we suspected that the fraud was organized by professional sponsors. They were banned from taking another exam for 11 months, says Amundsen.

Another eight people were banned from taking another exam for a period of 5 to 11 months.

It is the degree of severity that determines how long a candidate will have to wait for the next opportunity. People who tried to cheat cheat sheets, mobile phones, or let others take the test for them.

Eleven cases were reported to the police. Norwegian Public Roads Authority makes a detailed assessment of whether a case should be reported. The most serious cases are always reported, for example when we suspect that fraud has been organized by professional sponsors.

We will continue to work to detect fraud

In 2020, the Norwegian Road Administration introduced a longer waiting period for cheating on the theory test. Previously, candidates only received a two-week ban if they cheated, but now they can get between three and XNUMX months if they cheat or attempt to cheat.

“Hidden scam numbers are likely higher and we will continue to work to uncover them,” says Lill Tove Amundsen.

Less serious cheating can result in a three to nine month wait, and may involve using a cheat sheet or mobile phone to check answers in a theory test. Serious cheating is often organized and can result in a 10-12 month ban from taking another exam. Examples of serious cheating include the use of electronic aids to assist with a test, the taking of the test by someone other than the candidate, or the person filming and taking pictures of the test for later use.
