Since June 25, 2022, due to the emergency situation in Norway, the police have been temporarily armed. From March 13 at 08.00, the police will no longer be armed on a daily duty.

The Norwegian police are basically unarmed. The Storting decided that the police could be temporarily armed for daily duty. This is when it is deemed necessary to deal with a major emergency situation. One of the conditions of this provision is that a threat situation must be faced that goes beyond what is considered a mere threat picture.

New normal

The Police Security Service (PST) is responsible for assessing the terrorist threat in Norway.

In the latest threat assessment that the Norwegian Police Directorate received from PST, the terrorist threat was described as "moderate". This means that the PST considers it "possible" that someone will try to do so terrorist attack in Norway.

– Based on the threat picture described by the PST, we understand that the condition that there must be a severe emergency situation outside of what is considered a normal picture is no longer present. Thus, the legal basis for the police to be temporarily armed on a daily basis ceases, explains Police Director Benedicte Bjørnland.

The temporary arming of the police ends on March 13 at 8.00

“The threat picture is unpredictable and constantly evolving. The situation can change in a short time and the police are doing their best to quickly adapt to changes in the threat landscape, concludes Bjørnland.
