Rector Nina Skarpenes is of course very pleased with this year's interest in candidates for undergraduate studies.

“This year's number of candidates is simply very satisfactory. We need many good candidates for police training, and the fact is that more and more people perceive education and profession as a good choice, is a big plus for the university, the police and society. This is inspiring to all of us at the Norwegian Police Academy.

Many factors influence applicants' interest in higher education, and competition for applicants is fierce. The Norwegian Police Academy scores very well in the Study Barometer.

“Our students are among the most satisfied students in Norway, and police education also performs very well in terms of suitability for working life,” says Nina Skarpenes.

– In addition, since autumn last year, we have intensified recruitment work, including closer cooperation with police headquarters. We believe this effort contributed to more people applying.

Meaningful profession

Police Director Benedicte Bjørnland is happy that so many people want to become police officers.

“The profession of a police officer is significant, important, developing and exciting. It is now more clear to many than ever how important it is to protect our security and democracy, and the police have an important role to play here.

Now the recruitment process begins, which will decide which candidates will receive a place at university.

Police training as first choice

Among those who applied for admission to the Police Academy this year, 3 out of 4 chose police training as their first choice. This indicates many well-motivated candidates.

Among the first priority applicants, Oslo is the most popular. Just over half (54%) choose Oslo as their first choice. 26 percent of applicants prefer Stavern as a place to study, and 20 percent would prefer to be students at the Bodø Police Department.

Growth of applicants across the country

The universities obviously have the most applicants from the most populous provinces, such as Viken, Oslo and Vestland. All others are also well represented in this year's recruitment and we see an increase in all of them compared to last year.

If you look at candidate interest divided by population, the picture is a bit different. Agder and Troms and Finnmark are the leaders here, with 8 applicants per 10 inhabitants. Most counties have around 000 to 6,5 candidates, Nordland tops this group with 7. Rogaland has the fewest in this review, with 7,4. Nevertheless - in these statistics, the increase also applies to all poviats.

Still a high proportion of women

The percentage of women among this year's applicants is 56%. Over the past five years, the proportion of women has ranged between 53 and 57 percent.
