– Investing in teachers is one of the most important things we do for our children. Therefore, it is a serious problem when fewer people apply for teacher education, and at the same time, there is a shortage of teachers in many places, says Education Minister Kari Nessa Nordtun.

As part of the new joint strategy, the government and the 11th organizations have agreed to cooperate for development of education, ensure that kindergartens and schools become attractive workplaces and present positive aspects of teacher training and the teaching profession. The aim is to reverse this unfavorable development and enable more people to start teacher training and continue in the profession.

– This strategy is the first step. Now we and the parties stand together for a shared understanding of the problem and a joint effort to solve the challenges. We will share the good measures that already exist and cooperate on new solutions, says the Minister of Research and Higher Education Oddmund Hoel and adds:

– We realize that we bear responsibility both jointly and individually. At the same time, we want a fresh and constructive debate on both the teaching profession and teacher education in the future, says Hoel.

Better practice and better guidance

The Minister of Education believes that it is important for recruitment that kindergartens and schools are good workplace.

– Teachers do important work. We need to build a team around the child and student and ensure new graduates have a good one start in the teaching profession, says Nordtun.

The Minister of Scientific Research and Higher Education is also interested in the fact that students were better prepared for the jobs they are going for.

– We must make education as up-to-date and attractive as possible, it must be close to reality in the world kindergarten and school. Practice needs to be improved in educational programsso that students are well prepared for the work they choose. We will also talk about this in a report for the Storting on vocational training, which will be published this spring, says Hoel.
