Anyone who provides services such as tire changing, tire storage, hand car washing and other car care activities must be authorized by the Norwegian Labor Inspectorate. Now the Norwegian Labor Inspectorate conducts inspections in companies offering these services.

– The approval system must ensure the protection of fundamental rights and decent working conditions for workers. The approval system means that companies selling these services must document that they comply with working environment regulations, says Trude Vollheim, director of the Norwegian Labor Inspectorate.

When you buy services from an approved company, you contribute to the fight against unfair working conditions and workplace crime.

The Norwegian Labor Inspectorate will check whether companies are approved

– During the inspection, the Norwegian Labor Inspectorate will check whether any companies are approved. We will also check working conditions in enterprises. We hope those who have not yet applied for approval will do so, says Vollheim.

Industry exposed

Parts of the industry that deal with manual car washing and other car care, tire replacement and tire storage are characterized by dishonesty and crime in the workplace. Many people work there seasonally foreign workers and there is high work pressure combined with relatively low formal requirements. This group of workers is particularly vulnerable to exploitation.

Among the things that are checked during the inspection is whether the business is approved and whether the certificate of approval is visible on the premises. Another issue is whether employees have a health and safety card. We will also investigate whether employees are provided with the necessary protective equipment. It is also important that the company has systems of training and review of hazardous chemicals used in the workplace.

What can consumers do?

Consumers can see and track an overview from the Norwegian Labor Inspectorate which shows which companies are approved in their area. As of July 12, 2022, more than 600 companies across the country have received approval from the Norwegian Labor Inspectorate. All approved companies receive a certificate of approval. The certificate must be clearly visible to customers. This applies to both the company's headquarters and the websites and digital platforms on which the services are offered. As a consumer, you can therefore also find this.
