Tromsø Airport has been expanded by 10 square meters, as well as three modernized aircraft stands with bridge connections. The airport also gained a completely new baggage base.

The terminal at Tromsø Airport was not designed for the traffic growth seen in recent years, and the airport's capacity has long been exceeded. Before the expansion, Tromsø Airport had a capacity of 1,4 million travelers a year, compared to 2019 million in 2,3. Thanks to the new terminal, Tromsø Airport will be able to handle 2,7 million passengers a year.

– In addition to the new terminal in Tromsø, we are building two new airports in northern Norway, in Bodø and in Mo i Rana. We will also strengthen the route offer and lower ticket prices on routes that the state buys from airlines. These are all measures that will benefit the population and business community in northern Norway, said Nygård.

Avinor reports the growing interest in Tromsø in Europe and expects a significant increase in the number of travelers in the coming years, including tourists interested in seeing the northern lights and trips to the peaks. Avinor forecasts that Tromsø Airport will reach 2,5 million travelers in 2030 and 2,8 million by 2040. By then, several planes at the airport are likely to be fossil-free, commented by director Widerøe Stein Nilsen when spoke at the opening.
