On Thursday, Minister of Justice and Emergency Services Emilie Enger Mehl visited the police warehouse in Oslo. There she could see, among other things, large amounts of weapons, ammunition and a bomb launcher.

– Illegal weapons can fall into the wrong hands and end up in criminal circles. I am glad that these weapons have been removed from the potentially illegal market and cannot do any harm, says Mehl.

– I encourage everyone who has illegal weapons to hand them over to the police immediately. You do not risk punishment, and together we can prevent accidents and fight crime, says the Minister of Justice and Emergency Preparedness.

The government introduced a gun amnesty on January 1, 2023. In the first four months, the police received 8103 guns. To date, more weapons have been returned to the police than during the entire previous amnesty in 2017.

“This amnesty has been a great success so far. Police received hand grenades and explosives, among other things, which can be deadly to keep in the home, says Mehl.

“Many were probably also relieved to get rid of weapons that could have come from inheritances or estates. We see an influx of very old weapons, including World War II machine guns, Mehl says

The amnesty also applies to ammunition and illegal weapons that are not firearms, such as electroshock weapons, illegal knives and tear gas. Once you have surrendered your gun, you can apply for legal acquisition, obtain permission to sell it, or deactivate the gun so that it becomes unusable and can be kept.

If you have explosives, grenades, gunpowder or fireworks, it is important that you do not bring them to the police yourself. Contact the police on 02800 and they will help you.

If you are in possession of an illegal weapon on June 1, 2023, you may be punished. The penalty for illegal possession of firearms is a fine or imprisonment for up to 3 months. More serious cases are punishable by imprisonment of up to 6 years in accordance with the Penal Code.
