Domestic travel has increased to a record high in the first quarter of this year, according to the Norwegian Statistics Office. The pandemic has caused many Norwegians to discover the charms of traveling in their own country, and this trend continues after the lifting of travel restrictions.
Norwegians traveled a record amount in the first quarter of this year. We've never traveled the country in such large numbers in the first quarter before. As for foreign travel, it has returned to pre-pandemic levels. The travel survey also shows that Norwegians made 6,9 million trips between January and March this year. This represents an increase of 23 percent compared to the same period in 2022. It is also the highest number of trips ever recorded in the travel survey in the first quarter.

This is an increase in the number of trips in Norway contributed to this record. In the first quarter of this year, Norwegians made 5,5 million trips within the country. This represents an increase of 15,4 percent compared to the first quarter of 2022.
– It seems that many Norwegians enjoyed the Norwegian holidays during the pandemic. Although travel restrictions have long since disappeared, we continue to travel around our country like never before, says Kristin Aasestad, Senior Advisor at SSB.
“The combination of a record number of trips in the country and the same number of trips abroad as before the pandemic contributed to setting a record for trips in the first three months of this year,” says Kristin Aasestad.
Almost 80 percent more business trips
Of the 6,9 million trips made by Norwegians in the first quarter of this year, 1,6 million were business trips. This represents an increase of 79 percent compared to the same period last year, with domestic business travel contributing the most to the increase.
number business trips in Norway almost doubled. From 800 in the first quarter of 000 to 2022 million in the first quarter of this year. This was slightly higher than was common in the years before the pandemic hit.
Business travel abroad, which was almost non-existent during the pandemic, continued to be low as well. In the first quarter, Norwegians made 200 business trips abroad. This is about half of what was common in recent years before the outbreak of the pandemic.
