So far this year as a result of drownings 60 people died in Norway. 54 through July 31 and 6 so far in August show preliminary drowning statistics.

“The number of drownings is too high, and seriously so. My thoughts go out to those who have experienced an unimaginable tragedy. Working to prevent drowning is important to the government and to me personally, says Minister Skjæran.

The government is now establishing vision zero against drowning incidents in recreational areas. Earlier, the government had established a zero deficiency vision fatalities or serious injury at sea from recreational and commercial vessels.

There must be an action plan

The vision must be followed by a plan of action. We must bring about a coordinated national effort against drowning accidents and increase awareness of prevention. There are many good entities that do a lot of good work in this area and I expect a good contribution to further work - says the Minister of Fisheries and Oceans.

Drowning occurs while swimming, in connection with moving on dangerous ice, after falling from a boat or land. In general, the responsibility for drowning prevention is shared between different ministries, which together must develop an action plan.
