– Submarines make Norway safer. Submarines constitute Norway's key military potential. The ability to operate covertly combined with high striking power contributes significantly to the deterrent effect of the Norwegian Armed Forces. Submarines are a strategic potential of great importance for the operational capabilities of the Norwegian Armed Forces and allied cooperation.

Over the last fifty years, German submarine designers have developed a number of solutions that allow small and compact submarines to remain hidden in the shallow waters of the Baltic Sea. Germany, together with Norway, will for the first time integrate these solutions in a larger submarine that can operate stealthily for much longer than its predecessors and thus operate effectively in all conditions, from the archipelago to the open sea.

– Thanks to cooperation with Germany, Norway will receive the submarines we need. The cooperation provides great savings and good opportunities for the Norwegian industry.

Strategic Partnership on New Submarines and Anti-Ship Missiles

– Norway and Germany have concluded a strategic partnership on new submarines and anti-ship missiles. We are in the process of building broad and long-term cooperation based on the acquisition and operation of identical systems. We are thus taking a big step in the right direction to strengthen European defense cooperation within NATO by cooperating with Germany in two main systems; submarines and sea-guided missiles - says the Minister of National Defense.

Cooperation with Germany will mutually strengthen the respective national areas of technological expertise. It will thus contribute to strengthening the Norwegian and German defense industries in the future. In the same way that Norway recognizes Germany's advanced expertise in submarines, Germany recognizes Norway's advanced expertise in missiles and missile technology.

– Germany will eventually equip all its frigates with the new missiles and this will become a standard system in both the Norwegian and German navies. This ensures that the Norwegian Navy's missiles will find an even larger international user base, providing economies of scale and a solid international professional environment, Gram says.

Construction of a maintenance yard in Haakonsvern, Norway

Construction of the first boat will begin in 2023, with delivery in 2029. In Haakonsvern, Forsvarsbygg is currently building a brand new maintenance yard that will be able to service both Norwegian and German boats.

– We will also create a joint one offices in Norway, which will manage and conduct maintenance, ensure technical safety and plan future upgrades for new boats. The reason for this is the opportunity to save money over the life of the submarine by cooperating in the maintenance of identical submarines, Gram concludes.
