Announced by the Swedish Academy on October 5, 2023, “The 2023 Nobel Prize in Literature has been awarded to Norwegian author Jon Fosse for his innovative plays and prose that give voice to the ineffable.”

“His vast body of work written in Norwegian Nynorsk, spanning a variety of genres, includes a wealth of plays, novels, volumes of poetry, essays, children's books and translations. Although he is today one of the most frequently performed playwrights in the world, he also gains recognition for his prose.

Jon Fosse graduated in General Literature from the University of Bergen (UiB). In 2015, he received an honorary doctorate from the UiB.

Jon Fosse is a leading contemporary Norwegian writer and poet who has distinguished himself as a highly original and productive writer for 40 years. In particular, he gained international fame as a playwright and consolidated his position as the most important Norwegian playwright after Ibsen.

A great day for the university

We read on the website of the University of Bergen - the flag went up.

– It is also a great day for Westland, for Westland culture and heavy, good literature, as well as for the Nynorsk language, says Rector Margareth Hagen.

– This year's awards ceremony is of course a great event for Norwegian literature in general – and also for UiB and the subject of general literature, as well as the author community in Bergen, says professor of general literature Erik Bjerck Hagen.

Bjerck Hagen also sees it as a reward for Norwegian literature, which had reached a very high level during Fosse's time and is now enjoying natural recognition. He thinks it's about time, as ninety-five years have passed since Sigrid Undset received this award.
