“Doppelgänger” – A Deep Insight into the Spy History of the Polish People's Republic
“Doppelgänger” is a fascinating psychological drama with elements of a thriller and a spy film, which takes the viewer to the very center of the Eastern European reality of the 70s and 80s. The story is inspired by the true story of James Bond from the times of the Polish People's Republic, showing the intriguing background of high politics and its impact on the lives of ordinary people.
Multi-layered Plot
The film is a combination of two perspectives: espionage and psychological. On the one hand, it is a classic spy story with characters such as Jan Bitner and Hans Steiner - an intelligence officer of the Polish People's Republic impersonating him. The viewer observes how their fates intertwine with events such as August '80, Martial Law and the period of Poland's transformation. On the other hand, "Doppelgänger" is a film about the search for identity and emotional conflict. It raises difficult issues about love, destruction and the need to find oneself in a new reality.

Jan Holoubek, the creator of the film, refers in his production to the cinema of the 70s. Its goal is not only to tell an intriguing story, but also to show the inner landscape of the characters. Holoubek, previously known as a cinematographer and director, created a production that aims to present the viewer with a deep psychological analysis of the characters.

Born on March 4, 1978 in Warsaw, Jan Holoubek is a versatile creator. After graduating from the National Film School in Łódź at the cinematography department, over the years he gained experience as a cinematographer in numerous film and television productions. His directorial debut, "25 Years of Innocence. "The Case of Tomek Komenda" turned out to be one of the most famous and most awarded films of 2020.
“Doppelgänger” is more than just a spy movie. It is a complex story about human emotions, identity and political context times PRL.
