Driving with a trailer - do you know the rules?

, remember these 4 things. If not, you could lose your driving license sooner than you think.

Norwegians love trailers - whether it's for garden waste collection, removals and renovations, camping, transporting cars or boats.

If you are going to do the above mentioned activities you will need a BE driving license. You can then drive a trailer with a total weight of up to 3,5 tons (by the way, also remember to check how much your car can pull, it is written in the vehicle card).

With a category B driving license, you can in principle only tow trailers with a maximum permissible total weight of 750 kilograms. A heavier trailer can also be used if the total permissible weight of the car and trailer together is a maximum of 3500 kilograms.

No matter what type of trailer you have with you, you need to remember a few important rules, which many quickly forget.

Safety rope

Lots of people are sloppy about this. However, it is important to fasten the cable as it ensures that the trailer's brakes are applied when the trailer comes off the car.

If you are stopped without a safety cable in place, you will not be able to continue driving. You must fasten the rope to be allowed to continue driving. If the security cable is not working or has disappeared, you will not be able to continue your journey.

Load

If you are going to a landfill or transporting materials, you are tempted to do it quickly and all at once. However, remember that it is important to check both the trailer load rating and the total weight of the car and trailer.

If you are stopped with an overloaded trailer with a permissible total weight of up to 3500 kilograms, it should be unloaded to the permissible total weight. In serious cases, the driver of the vehicle may be fined by the police.

For trailers with a gross vehicle weight above 3500 kilograms, a reloading fee at the specified rates will apply. Additionally, you will have to unload the trailer.

Securing the load

One of the points that many do not follow is securing the cargo. The Road Traffic Act §23, first paragraph, reads as follows:

“Before driving, the driver must make sure that the vehicle is in good technical condition and that it is properly secured. He must ensure that the vehicle will not pose a danger to others, for example through the wrong way in which the load is secured and stowed. "

Additional provisions, such as securing the cargo, can be found in the Regulations of Use §3-2 and §3-3.

Control and reaction forms

During the inspection, the Statens vegvesen will make a visual assessment. They will verify that adequate measures have been taken sufficiently to secure the load and / or evaluate tensile forces, calculate safety effectiveness, and check any certification if necessary.

Each case is assessed individually for unsecured cargo. This can range from giving safety advice in less serious cases to reporting traffic incidents. For example, if there is a possibility of a load or parts of it shifting or falling off. All cases entail the prohibition of using the trailer. The load must be properly secured before continuing to travel.

80 km / h maximum

Another issue that many forget is speed. Maximum allowed speed when driving a car with a trailer is 80 km/h. This applies regardless of whether speed limit on the road it is 90-100 or 110 km/h.

In order to be able to travel at 80 km / h, the trailer must also have its own brakes. If there are none, the maximum speed is 60 km / h. This applies if the actual total weight is greater than 300 kilograms. For example, if you travel at 116 km / h in the 100 km / h zone - you risk losing your driving license. This is because a car with a trailer can go a maximum of 80 km / h.
