Approval of the trailer to travel at a speed of 100 km/h

The Tempo 100 approval allows you to tow some trailers or caravans at a speed of up to 100 km/h. If you have a trailer that is over four years old, it must pass an EU inspection before you can order a Tempo 100 inspection from the Norwegian Roads Authority. Trailers approved for the Tempo 100 must undergo an EU approved inspection every two years in the same way as regular passenger cars.

There are also requirements for a car towing a trailer. Even if the trailer is approved for Tempo 100, you cannot drive at a speed of 100 km/h if the towing vehicle does not meet the requirements.

From March 18, 2024, you can drive in Denmark with the Norwegian Tempo 100 approval. You can also drive in Norway with the Danish Tempo 100 approval if the trailer is not registered in Norway. For more information on requirements and conditions, read more about international Tempo 100 programs.

Requirements for trailers and tow trucks

The car must have ABS brakes and a permissible total weight of not more than 3500 kilograms. In addition, there are requirements regarding the weight of the passenger car and trailer combination, so that the towing vehicle is not too light in relation to the trailer. There are also requirements for equipment that ensures stable and safe driving. Trailer brakes and shock absorbers, the trailer's stabilizer coupling with the tractor or the car's electronic stability control system compensate if the car is initially too light in relation to the trailer. Trailers without brakes cannot be approved for use as Tempo 100.

How to get Tempo 100 approved

1. Use the calculator on the Statens vegvesen website to check whether your trailer can be approved and whether your car can be used as a towing vehicle at a speed of 100 km/h.

2. Carry out an approved EU inspection of the trailer if it is more than four years old. It is important to carry out an EU inspection before homologating your Tempo 100 as you must not drive with a Tempo 100 approved trailer without an approved EU inspection.

3. Make an appointment for the approval of the Tempo 100 trailer.

Deregistering a trailer from the Tempo 100 program

If you wish to deregister your trailer from the Tempo 100 program, you will need to make an appointment to reclassify it as a 'normal trailer' in the same way as you would to reclassify your trailer as a Tempo 100.

After reclassification, the trailer will no longer be covered by the EU-kontroll system. As the owner, you will still be responsible for ensuring the trailer is in legal condition. This means that the Norwegian Road Administration will note any deficiencies. However, unregulated faults that only relate to Tempo 100 requirements, i.e. tire age and speed markings, will not be checked by the Norwegian Road Administration.
