In today's article, we want to discuss a topic that will surely arouse the interest of all drivers. What about fines and penalty points in Norway? How much will we pay for speeding in the country of fjords, and how much for parking in a forbidden place? It is worth noting that on June 1, 2020, new rules on the expulsion of foreigners entered into force. The new regulations also apply to road traffic. We present a short cheat sheet!
– what rules apply?
The law for foreigners became more stringent on June 1, 2020. It will be possible to expel foreigners with a temporary or permanent residence permit if they commit serious traffic violations. Offenses that threaten the life of other road users or offenses with imprisonment without the possibility of suspension. We are also talking about any offenses that may result in the loss of the driving license, such as:
- driving under the influence of alcohol,
- significant speeding,
- moving around Norwegian roads vehicle in very poor technical condition.

The pattern of fines in Norway can be divided into three categories - depending on the speed that has been exceeded.
- the permitted speed is 60 km / h or less and the speed exceeds:
- up to 5 km / h - 800 NOK,
- 6 to 10 km / h - NOK 2,
- 11 to 15 km / h - NOK 3,
- 16 to 20 km / h - NOK 5,
- 21 to 25 km / h - NOK 8.
Speeding by 26 km / h or more may result in loss of driving license.
- the speed limit is 70 km / h or more and the speed is exceeded:
- up to 5 km / h - 800 NOK,
- 6 to 10 km / h - NOK 2,
- 11 to 15 km / h - NOK 3,
- 16 to 20 km / h - NOK 4,
- 21 to 25 km / h - NOK 6,
- 26 to 30 km / h - NOK 8,
- 31 to 35 km / h - NOK 10.
Speeding by 36 km / h or more may result in loss of driving license.
- the speed limit is 90 km / h or more and the speed is exceeded:
from 36 km / h to 40 km / h - NOK 10.
Speeding by 41 km / h or more may result in loss of driving license.
Other offenses… How much will we pay?
Red light run - NOK 6.
Overtaking in a prohibited place - NOK 6800
Failure to follow signs give way, STOP, etc. 6800 NOK
Driving on a bumper - NOK 6800

Driving a vehicle below 3,5 tonnes of the permissible total weight in the event that the parking brake is inactive - NOK 2.
On the other hand, moving a vehicle over 3,5 tons of the permissible total weight in the event that the parking brake is inoperative - 5 250 NOK
Driving the vehicle in prohibited places (e.g. on a pavement, bicycle path, promenade, etc.), turning from an illegal lane, driving in restricted zones (limited by white or yellow lines) - 4 NOK.
What about penalty points?
In Norway, it is enough to have 8 penalty points to lose your driving license. They reset after 3 years. Penalty points are cumulative. These "Polish" penalty points are also taken into account.
Penalty points are awarded for:
- for exceeding the speed by:
- 11-15 km / h if the speed limit is 60 km / h or lower - 2 points,
- 16 km / h or more if the speed limit is 60 km / h or less - 3 points,
- 16-20 km / h or more if the speed limit is 70 km / h or higher - 2 points,
- 21 km / h or more if the speed limit is 70 km / h or more - 3 points,
- red light - 3 points,
- illegal overtaking - 3 points,
- persistence of priority when necessary - 3 points,
- driving in an area closed to traffic - 3 points,
- if you are too close to the vehicle in front / too little distance between vehicles - 3 points,
- riding a modified motorcycle / moped - 3 points,
- no security for a passenger under the age of 15 - 2 points.
Cyclists and young drivers
For young drivers, penalty points are double counted. Fines can also be imposed on cyclists for offenses such as:
- no working bicycle light - NOK 1,
- running a red light - NOK 1,
- ignoring a sign prohibiting cycling in the area - NOK 1.
