In October, 15 people died in road accidents in Norway. This is almost three times more than last year, when 6 people died on the roads.

More than a decade has passed since the last time there were such high numbers of road deaths in October. This year in road accidents 111 people have already died. This is 16 more than in the same period last year. This is what preliminary data on accidents show Norwegian Road Administration.

Many accidents with several deaths in 2023

Twelve of this year's fatal accidents were accidents in which two or three people died. There are an extremely large number of them.

– This year we are witnessing many accidents in which several people died, says Svein Ringen from the Norwegian Road Administration.

– At the same time last year, there were eight accidents in which several people died, compared to twelve this year. In the last five years, we have only had three to five accidents, resulting in several deaths in the first ten months of the year. This may be a coincidence, but we will take it into account in the analysis of this year's fatal accidents, says Svein Ringen.

An increase in the number of fatal collisions

– After years of decline, we see growth. This number applies in particular to fatal head-on accidents, says Svein Ringen. At the same time, we see that there are fewer accidents involving pedestrians. Seven this year compared to eleven last year.

In the first ten months of this year, 81 men and 30 women died in road accidents. More than half (60) died in a car. This is an increase of 14 compared to last year. Heavy vehicles were involved in 34 accidents, and five of those killed were drivers of these vehicles.

– It is too early to say anything about the causes of this year's fatal accidents, says Svein Ringen. However, we know that if everyone fastens their seat belts and drives without stimulants, we will save many lives. There is now snow in many parts of the country, so if everyone drives according to the conditions and pays attention to the road, we have great potential to save lives in traffic, concludes Ringen.
