Minister of Health and Healthcare Ingvild Kjerkol launched the bus network during her visit to Østfold Hospital in Kalnes on Tuesday. The incorporation of the hospital in Østfold was completed on December 5.

All hospitals in Norway are now connected to Stamnettet, which provides electronic and digital communication between hospitals.

All hospitals in Norway are now connected to Stamnett

– Stamnett is the basis for the progressive digitization of health care. This ensures that all hospitals can now send X-rays digitally, rather than using taxis as before, she said minister health and care services Ingvild Kjerkol during her visit on Tuesday.

Stamnett provides better and faster services for patients and strengthens safety digital with more robust solutions. Without Stamnett, the government cannot implement the e-health initiatives we have started.

What is Stamnettet?

– Stamnettet is a network – of digital infrastructure – that digitally connects all hospitals in our country. This means that hospitals can provide services to patients services they need.

- Right before Christmas The Norwegian Health Network has completed the construction of a new bus network. It is more secure, more accessible, has higher bandwidth than before and has greater support for various e-health solutions.

– Østfold Hospital in Kalnes was the last major hospital to connect to Stamnettet in early December. The hospital in Kongsberg became the last hospital to be connected a little later in December.

– Stamnettet has four important functions:
Security: Many protection mechanisms are in place.
Availability: The goal is Stamnettet to provide 100% uptime to ensure uninterrupted access to health services.
High throughput allows for fast and reliable transfer of large amounts of data.
Support for e-health: Stamnettet is central to our digital infrastructure, ensuring smooth electronic interaction.

Dependence on modern Stamnettet

– This is an important event because the backbone network is a modernized and strengthened network infrastructure for national and regional digital interaction, Kjerkol explained.

One of the main ones goals is to reduce risk of downtime in hospitals. If an outage occurs, all hospital IT systems will become unavailable, which poses a serious threat for patient safety.

Emergency preparedness was tested in bad weather

It wasn't that long ago that the benefits of backbone networking were fully demonstrated. When Hurricane "Ingunn" recently hit Northern Norway, it led to several breaches in the country's infrastructure Northern Norway, and two of the three bus lines between Bodø and Tromsø failed.

However, Stamnettet is structured in such a way that there are always a minimum of three lines, and as long as one of them was working, all the hospital IT systems worked as they should.

“It shows how important it is to have independent, independent lines and is a good example of how important it is bus network – Kjerkol explained.

Various uses of Stamnettet

Stamnettet has several different and specific applications in everyday hospital life - from medical records systems to internal temperature and medical equipment.

– Ensuring the availability of our medical documentation systems, the temperature in rooms controlled by ICT systems in the building technology and the efficiency of the necessary medical equipment is of key importance for patients undergoing planned surgeries and more, says Kjerkol.
