Increase in births in 2023 in Norway

The number of births in 2023 increased slightly, with over 500 more children born than in the previous year. This is evidenced by preliminary data from the Medical Birth Registry. The biggest increase recorded in the north.

Increase in births in Norway

FHI is now publishing preliminary data on births in Norway in 2023. While the first quarter of 2023 showed decline in numbers births compared to previous years, birth rates were higher for the rest of the year. In 2023, a total of 52 new citizens were born, which is over 551 more children than in 500 (an increase of 2022%).

The greatest increase in the North

– As many as 11 of the 14 maternity institutions in the Northern Regional Health Authority Norway has seen an increase in numbers births, and Bodø stood out with an 11% increase compared to 2022 data, says Ferenc Macsali, senior consultant and researcher at the Medical Birth Registry at the Norwegian Institute of Public Health.

It has been reported throughout the Norwegian Regional Health Service birth rate increased by 5,6 percent. This means that 2023 more northerners were born in 232 compared to the previous year. A total of 4 births were registered at the Regional Health Office in Northern Norway.

Fewer births in Ullevål in Oslo

The Regional Health Authority in Southeast Norway recorded a 1,2 percent increase in the birth rate, while the Regional Health Authority in Western Norway and in Central Norway recorded a decline of 0,8 and 0,2 percent, respectively.

Birth rate in Oslo region increased and in the Oslo area there was a change between maternity institutions. While 2023 fewer births were recorded in Ullevål in 400 compared to the previous year, birth rates are increasing in all nearby hospitals, including Drammen, Bærum, Rikshospitalet, Akershus and Østfold.

“The closure of the ABC unit at Ullevål Hospital in 2023 may have played a role in where women in the Oslo region gave birth to their babies in 2023,” says Macsali.

Average age of women giving birth in Norway

In 2023 average age of women in Norway giving birth to a first child remained stable compared to the previous year and amounted to 30,2 years, while for women who gave birth to a second or third child, the average age increased from 32,7 years in 2022 to 33,0 years in 2023 r. Ten years ago, the corresponding figures for Norway were 28,7 years for women who gave birth to their first child and 32,0 years for multiparous women.

 Preliminary data

Medical Birth Registry Norwegian Institute of Public Health (NIPH) now publishes preliminary birth data every quarter. These are statistics on selected birth information that do not require further quality control in the registry. Final birth data for 2023 will be published on April 23, 2024, along with information about pregnancy, delivery and child. Maternal and child health cases will be published in fall 2024.
