Minister Andreas Bjelland Eriksen calls on municipalities to strengthen their efforts to save the Oslo Fjord. The condition of Oslofjorden is very serious. In a letter to 118 municipalities located in the Oslofjorden catchment area, the minister appeals for a number of specific actions to be taken to save the fjord.

The minister appeals to municipalities to save Oslofjord

More than half of Norway's population lives in the Oslofjorden catchment area, which includes a total of 118 municipalities. All these municipalities influence the Oslofjorden. The government has taken decisive action on Oslofjorden, taking measures to reduce the impact, including: pollution from sewage treatment plants and agriculture. In the letter, the minister encourages municipalities to increase their efforts. Both the state and municipalities have a responsibility to implement measures that will benefit not only Oslofjorden, but also areas throughout the fjord catchment.

The state should also implement measures

– I encourage all municipalities around Oslofjorden to engage actively, purposefully and effectively. The state should also implement those activities for which it is responsible. All beneficiaries must get involved. Only in this way can we reverse the negative development in Oslofjorden and achieve a clean and rich fjord, said Minister Andreas Bjelland Eriksen.

a new report on the state of implementation of the measures included in the Oslo Fjord Plan indicated that significant efforts are being made on many fronts, but implementation of measures is lagging behind

The Minister of Climate and Environment called on all municipalities to:

– Taking a political approach to activities in the municipality and actively striving for the rapid implementation of the Oslofjord plan activities for which the municipality is responsible.

– Systematic work on environmental activities, especially related to emissions from municipal sewage treatment plants and sewage treatment in dispersed development, river bank zones and activities ensuring the protection of the aquatic environment through good spatial planning.

– Start planning now to implement nitrogen removal from wastewater. Searching for good examples of inter-municipal cooperation.

– Ensure stricter enforcement of the coastal construction ban and work to remove illegal barriers preventing access to the coastal zone for the general public.

– Establish procedures to ensure the protection of important natural habitats in the sea and obtain information on the number of disturbances exceeding natural marine types.
