Heavy snow and increasing winds are creating road challenges in parts of southern Norway. There was a power outage in several places, which may affect mobile phone coverage, we read in a press release from Nkom.

No mobile coverage

– Ekom networks in Norway are generally operational, and we have three mobile players who, to a greater or lesser extent, own their own network. So far, mobile operators are reporting little disruption to mobile networks despite heavy amounts of snow and increasing winds. However, the weather forecast for the next 24 hours looks challenging, says Nkom's director of security, Elise Lindeberg

Good cooperation between authorities and mobile operators

Lindeberg emphasizes that there is good cooperation between authorities, mobile operators, emergency services, public administration bodies and other parties involved.

– Telia, Telenor and Ice work well to prevent outages and also repair quickly when the mobile network goes down. The authorities made sure that in many places in Norway improved communications have been provided so that we are better able to keep mobile networks open in the event of a temporary power outage. If there is a power outage, the local effects will most likely not be significant. Batteries in base stations have and will continue to contribute to reducing the impact of shorter power outages.

However, Lindeberg encourages everyone to be prepared for possible loss of mobile coverage:

– Remember that you can call emergency services even if you do not have coverage from your mobile operator. It is assumed that there will be cellular coverage of at least one company in the place where you are. If necessary, you can also use the Internet to make phone calls, and if there is a power outage and you need to charge your phone, you can use a computer or electric car as a power source, says Elise Lindeberg, director of security at Nkom.
