16 percent of the population uses snus every day. While the percentage of smokers has halved, the percentage of people taking snus has almost doubled. Snus use is most common among young men, but the percentage of young women using snus has increased significantly over the past decade.
The proportion of people taking snus has almost doubled
New statistics on smoking, alcohol and other drugs show that in 2023, 16% of the population aged 16-74 used snus daily and 4% occasionally.
- More people use everyday snus. Over the last ten years, the proportion of people taking snus daily has almost doubled, says Sindre adviser Mikael Haugen.
Daily snus use is most common among men. However, in the last decade this percentage was higher among women. In 2013, 4% of women and 14% of men used snus every day. In 2023, these proportions increased to 11%. in the case of women and 21 percent in the case of men.

Snus is most popular among young people
Daily snus use is most common among people aged 25–34, where in 2023, 29% used snus daily. This means doubling the number of people compared to 2013, when the corresponding percentage was 14%.
Among women aged 25-34, the percentage of people using snus daily increased from 5% in 2013 to 23% in 2023. This represents an almost five-fold increase in ten years.
There has also been a large increase in the percentage of young men using snus. Among men in the 25-34 age group, 34%, or 1 in 3, say they used snus every day in 2023. This is an increase from 23 percent. in 2013
– It is worth noting that although the use of snus can be considered a young phenomenon, the percentage of people using snus every day among the population aged 35 and over has also increased over the last ten years, says Haugen.
Over the last decade, the percentage of smokers has halved
At the same time, the more snus, the fewer people smoke. In 2023, 7% of the population aged 16–74 smoked daily. This represents a halving since 2013.
– Over the last ten years, the percentage of daily smokers in all age groups has declined, and the number of women and men who smoke daily is about the same, says Haugen.
Among people aged 25-74 with primary school education, 2023% smoked every day in 19. population. Among people with secondary school education, this share was 10%. At the other end of the scale there are people with secondary or higher education, where the percentage of daily smokers is only 2%.
Just as many say they smoke occasionally as they do every day. In both groups, smokers constitute 7%. They smoke occasionally, mostly young people. 15 percent of the population aged 16-24 say they smoke occasionally.
