In 2024, the government allocated NOK 393 million for activities related to the competences of kindergarten employees and NOK 1,6 billion for further education of teachers and school principals. Thanks to this, from autumn 2024, places will be provided for, among others, approximately 1850 teachers in kindergartens and 5400 teachers in primary schools, who will be able to continue their education from autumn 2024.
– In recent years, education has become a priority among many teachers, managers and owners, which I am very happy about. One of the most important things we can do to recruit and retain teachers is to ensure that kindergartens and schools are good places to work, where there is opportunity for deepening and development throughout their professional lives, says Nordtun.

Focuses on special education
This year, priority will also be given to teachers applying to teach subjects such as mathematics, English, Norwegian, Sami and Norwegian Sign Language.
There is still a great demand for teachers in kindergartens and schools with knowledge in the field of special education. It is important to get bigger number of children and pupils requiring additional care could have been identified earlier and cared for by staff with appropriate specialist knowledge. At least 800 of the school's teachers may benefit from further education in special education this year.
The government also continues to invest in practical and aesthetic items. In 2024, at least 600 teachers will be able to continue their education in these subjects. Surveys and opinions show that many teachers need greater competences in these subjects.
– We are in the process of making school more practical, diverse and relevant because children and youth they learn best in different ways. In a more practical and diverse school, motivation will increase and students will be able to learn more. Then teachers also need to acquire the necessary competences, says Nordtun.
