- We are now facing the greatest humanitarian catastrophe since World War II. The government decided today to provide Ukrainian citizens with temporary collective protection, as does the EU. This means that escaping Ukrainians will avoid time-consuming individual treatment and therefore they can be helped faster, says Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre.

Usually the need to protect an asylum seeker has to be assessed on a case by case basis. The decision to grant Ukrainians temporary collective protection is an exception to the principle of individual assessment and means protection of the entire group. This was most recently done during the Kosovo conflict in the late XNUMXs.

- Temporary collective protection does not constitute grounds for obtaining a permanent residence permit. Ukrainians who come to Norway now may initially obtain a residence permit for up to a year, says the Minister of Justice and Crisis Management Emilie Enger Mehl.

W Norway will enter into force a collective protection system coordinated with other European countries. The government will return to details soon.

The government expects a large number of refugees from Ukraine

About 300 Ukrainian citizens have already arrived in Norway, but the government expects there will be many more. According to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, one million Ukrainians have already fled their homeland.

- We are ready to provide protection and assistance to people fleeing the hostilities in Ukraine. This will take place in close cooperation with other countries in Europe. The Immigration Directorate is now tasked with creating more places for refugees, says the Minister of Justice and Emergency Preparedness.
