A clear majority in the European Parliament voted on Thursday in favor of a bill that will stop the so-called wild west conditions on the Internet.

The Digital Services Regulation (DSA) aims to stop harmful content and also regulates a number of types of marketing. The European Parliament approved its own version of the directive on Thursday.

DSA Proceedings

The DSA follows another related directive, the Digital Markets Regulation. It is aimed directly at giant companies with huge market power, such as Meta / Facebook, Alphabet / Google, Amazon, Apple and Microsoft.

In November, EU member states approved a different version of the two directives, and now negotiations are needed to arrive at a final coherent text.

Denmark's representative Christel Schaldemose spearheaded the debate in parliament.

- Big companies can no longer hide behind a veil of ignorance. He says they will have to face the consequences of their algorithms.

Violation of the new regulations may result in fines of up to 6%. global business turnover.

- What happens on the Internet, parents understand it, is like in the wild west. We no longer know what our children are doing - hate, hate speech, attacks on democracy, personal attacks, counterfeit products. Said EU Internal Market Commissioner Thierry Breton, who presented the original proposal in 2020.

"With the DSA, what is allowed in everyday life will be allowed on the Internet - while what is forbidden will be prohibited." He told the French RTL.
