Update from 11.04.2019/XNUMX/XNUMX Anyone who pays taxes in Norway is automatically a payer for the NRK subscription, so there are no exceptions at the moment and we suggest you refrain from sealing the TV because it will soon turn out that it is irrelevant.

The article below was written in June 2018 before the change in the law on RTV in Norway and until there is other information stating that the sealing of the actual cannons is not advised to do so Radio Wataha will inform you soon about the progress of the government's project on this matter

Avoid the annual subscription

The main benefit of sealing a TV set is the exemption from the obligation to pay the annual subscription for its possession. It is currently NOK 2 970 and must be paid each year, with the payment being split into two installments. It is worth mentioning that, according to official announcements, this tax will increase.

Legal basis for sealing

As our guest says, after purchasing a television set in Norway, everyone will receive an invoice for their possession. This results from Article 9 of the relevant Act. However, it is worth mentioning that the obligation to pay the license fee arises when the TV owner uses NRK channels. This tax can be avoided if the TV antenna socket is sealed. In such a case, the TV ceases to be a TV receiver because we lose the ability to use the tuner. From the point of view of legal definitions, the TV becomes a monitor.

What about set-top boxes imported from Poland?

Many people try to avoid the obligation to pay the subscription by bringing a set-top box registered from Poland. However, it is worth knowing that such action is illegal. The very contract with the operator makes it clear - this type of device cannot be removed from Poland. Thus, even with the receiver sealed and using the set-top box only by plugging in the HDMI cable, we are not exempt from the subscription. As Paweł Syposz emphasizes - each decoder has a built-in tuner and, from the point of view of Norwegian law, you have to pay for it. However, there is no provision that would allow you to enter a house to check whether its resident uses a Polish decoder.

Clearing the records of NRK

An important information is also the fact that everyone who has purchased a receiver in Norway is entered in the NRK records. In this case, it is not enough just to seal the newly purchased TV set, because there will still be an obligation to pay the subscription for all the receivers we have.

You can "clear" these records. It is enough for the client to send an appropriate notification with a description that it is probably assigned to many receivers in this register. In such a situation, these TV sets can be deleted.

When to use the sealing service?

In Norway, there are two deadlines in which the television can be sealed and the subscription fee waived. Installments paid for it cover the periods: from January to June and from June to December. Therefore, it is best to report the willingness to use such a service in May - it may turn out that its performance in June will not be physically feasible due to the too large number of orders.

Being late is not worth it

The key issue is the deadline for reporting the suspension of the NRK license. Current regulations state that this must be done before the end of June. If this happens, for example, on July 1, then the license will be suspended only from January 2019. For the period June - December 2018, still a fee must be paid.
