New rail connections are planned for the residents of Nordre Aker. The changes result from the Gjøvikbanen Development Strategy, which was adopted for implementation in October 2014 by the Norwegian Railway Administration. New connections are not everything - further modernization of this rail route is also planned for 2018-2029.

The main goal of the modernization of Gjøvikbanen

As stated in the document, the main goal of the Gjøvikbanen modernization is “to ensure safety and the continuous development of connections despite the constraints of a single-track railway line. It is also key to create links between Gjøvikbanen and local and regional rail connections," the report reads.

Changes coming soon

In the near future, the planned changes include the creation of permanent connections that the residents of Nordre Aker will be able to use. As Svein Horrisland informs in an interview with NAB.no - director in the Norwegian Railways Administration - there will be no connections between Snippen and Movatn, but the trains will run at fixed hours. This will make it easier for all passengers to plan their trip. Currently, connections are irregular and trains run, among others at 16:45 pm, 17:08 pm, 18:04 pm or 18:46 pm.

- Bigger changes are waiting for travelers using the stops Kjelsås, Nydalen and Grefsen - adds Svein Horrisland - There will be more connections. Currently, trains run three times in two hours, and after shifts, they will run four times in two hours.

Planned changes to railway connections. We still have to wait for the changes

It is worth mentioning, however, that you still have to wait before increasing the number of connections. All because Gjøvikbanen's new development program is a long-term investment and covers the years 2018-2029. The entire traction will be modernized based on the line model, which was presented in 2014.

According to Svein Horrisland, the number of trains mentioned above should be increased until at least 2022. First, renovation work has to be carried out to increase the passenger capacity to Gjøvikbanen. The plans also envisage, inter alia, construction of a side platform at the Movatn stop in 2022/2023. A digital ERTMS system will also be implemented.
