The Norwegian Ministry of Transport is considering the possibility of collecting a driving license for a phone call made by the person driving the vehicle. As statistics show - almost a third of fatal accidents were caused by drivers talking on the phone. The imposed fines do not bring the expected results.
Almost 1/3 of accidents are caused by talking on the phone
As statistics show, only in the years 2011-2015 accidents caused by talking on the phone accounted for approximately 1/3 of all road accidentswhose victims required hospitalization. Their total share in all road incidents is approximately 12% of road incidents. This is why the Ministry of Transport decided to take radical steps to improve this state of affairs.

Talking on the phone behind the wheel is dangerous
According to Geir Marthinsen, a telephone conversation with the driver can be fatal in its consequences. All due to the fact that during this activity, drivers lose concentration and are less focused on driving. As a result, their response time to threats or changing road conditions is slower. That is why Marthinsen encourages you to use the possibility of connecting your phone to the audio system in the car. Thanks to this, it is possible to control the device using the control panel installed in the steering wheel. Such a solution will not distract concentration, which may be crucial in a crisis situation on the road.

Is that a good solution?
Will the idea of the Ministry of Transport bring the expected results? As statistics show, approx. 1/3 of serious accidents is caused by performing this activity, which constitutes almost 12% of all road accidents. Currently, police officers can impose fines in the amount of NOK 1700, but this does not bring any change. That is why such a drastic solution was proposed - all to encourage drivers to connect their phones to the built-in sound systems in cars. Project promoters hope that the level of concentration will increase, which may be crucial in crisis situations on the road.
