Sometimes it takes a lot of persistence to get a mortgage and buy your own property. However, when you are at your destination and living in your own home, it is worth considering home insurance in Norway. This way you will protect your building against the consequences of fire or flooding.

Home insurance versus property insurance

Basically, you should distinguish between two types of insurance - home and property. They differ in terms of the scope of services. Home insurance is broader in this respect and covers the building and its furnishings. It ensures the payment of compensation in such situations as, inter alia, fire, flooding or other factors causing the destruction of the building itself. Property insurance, on the other hand, applies to items and equipment that are inside the apartment and may be damaged as a result of, for example, burglary, theft, fire or flood.

In the context of home insurance, it is worth emphasizing one more issue. As a rule, we do not have to worry about this type of policy if we live in a multi-family building. Usually, it is the owner of the property who takes care of securing his own property. Home insurance allows not only the payment of compensation for damage caused, for example, by fire or flooding. It is also the protection of damage caused to third parties as a result of, inter alia, improper use of real estate.

Home insurance packages

The scope of benefits as part of taking out home insurance is also important. There are usually three types of packages available in Norway: basic (Norwegian standardforsikring), standard (Norwegian hoveddekning) and super (superforsikring).

The basic package covers only the main building and the adjacent buildings. The standard package, on the other hand, offers a full range of benefits that will be paid to cover damages caused by, for example, floods, fire or other random events. The super package includes the same scope of protection as the standard one, but the amount of paid compensation is much higher.

Property insurance - what does it cover?

In addition, it is worth insuring your own property. Unlike a home policy, it covers the protection of our items and devices that are in the apartment. Importantly, we can also buy such insurance when we rent an apartment.

Is it worth buying?

Although home insurance in Norway is not obligatory for building owners, it is worth considering using such a solution. If we are only tenants in a multi-family building, we do not have to worry about home insurance. Importantly, we can also purchase property insurance if we only rent an apartment. As a rule, such policies come in three available packages: basic, standard and super.
