Working as an electrician in Norway requires him to comply with certain legal provisions. You can learn about the qualifications that you should have, what you need to do and what the everyday life of an electrical installation specialist looks like in this article.

Work as an electrician in Norway - qualifications

An electrician in Norway should first of all obtain the so-called "Godkjent" or graduate from a Norwegian vocational school to obtain a fagbrev. These requirements are essential for a low voltage electrician. When working with high voltage (so-called "HV"). There are also people in the electrical industry who take professional responsibility for the work they do. They have the appropriate building qualifications.

Acceptance of electrical installations

The Construction Directorate is not an institution authorized to commission installations. Work as an electrician in Norway also does not require notification to the commune of the fact of performing work in a given place. Professionals in this industry are subject to the DSB (norw. Directorate for Civil Protection and Emergency). On the other hand, all inspections of the installation are carried out by the energy company competent for the place where the service is provided.

Completion of work notification

After completing the work, the electrician is obliged to measure, prepare and send documentation to both the customer and the local power company. Employees from this institution have the right to come to the place where the service is provided for the purpose of inspection. Importantly, such a visit can be made without prior notice. Usually, the selection of sites to be inspected is random.

It is the customer's responsibility

It is worth knowing that it is the customer who orders the electrical installation that is responsible for it. It is his responsibility to verify the company he will commission to provide the service. He must ensure that the selected contractor has the necessary qualifications and certificates entitling him to practice as an electrician in Norway.

Control is not a bad thing

Norwegian installation checks are nothing wrong. Everyone always treats them as something positive (mainly due to their own safety), and perceives the results of the inspection and possible reservations as an opportunity to improve the quality of services provided. It is worth mentioning that the construction technology in Norway is based on wood, therefore it is advisable to take any measures to increase the level of safety of the household members living in a given farm.

Inspection report

After the inspection, the owner or user of the installation receives a report. It includes the following:

  • cover letter,
  • irregularities found in the course of the control.

The submitted report may contain from two to even ten pages. It all depends on how many non-conformities have been identified by inspectors from the energy company. The documentation also includes an indication of what specific safety regulations have been broken. Procedures are also included to define how to proceed in order to remedy irregularities, which must take place within a certain time limit.

Authorized electric company - where to look?

All corrections must be done by an authorized electric company. In order to search for such an entity, you should avoid such websites as: 1881 and Proof. However, you should look for them in the official DSB register. The search engine allows both the verification of the company we are interested in in terms of authorization and searching for a specific district or a specific municipality.

Who can run such a company?

From a business point of view, an authorized electric company can be run by anyone, even if they do not have the appropriate qualifications. In order to be able to work on the installations, he must have an installer on his team who is authorized to assume professional responsibility for the work performed. All works are carried out under his supervision.

Importing materials from Poland

In the case of the electrical industry, it is not allowed to download electrical materials and accessories from Poland. This is perceived very badly by the inspectors at the local electrical plant. This is mainly due to the fact that, for example, the cables do not meet the Norwegian criteria. Combustion energy is different in this country, which could have fatal consequences. In Poland, it will end up with a sooty wall - in Norway, the entire building, which is usually made of wood, will burn. For this reason, Norwegian standards for electrical installations are much stricter than in our country.

Electrician work in Norway - why such a price?

The salary of an electrician in Norway is not the lowest, and these rates are governed by the provisions of Norwegian law. But this is only one of the factors determining the cost of the services provided by the electric company. The entrepreneur running such an entity is also obliged to send his employees for training once a year, which includes the FSE of the work of an electrician. There are also costs of professional equipment, control and measurement devices and the ELINN system.

Work as an electrician in Norway - warranty and responsibility

Electricians' rates are higher compared to other companies in the construction industry. Working as an electrician in Norway is primarily a high responsibility, which is decisively influenced by the construction technology in this country. Such companies also offer a 5-year warranty, which is directly provided by Norwegian law.

Working as an electrician in Norway requires adherence to strict regulations. This is due to the fact that Norwegian construction is mostly wooden houses. For this reason, the installation located in them must meet the highest safety standards. In the event of a short circuit, there is a high probability that a fire will start throughout the building, which will burn down immediately. This is why, for example, it is inadvisable to use Polish cables and electrical connections. However, you can use Polish sockets and accessories - provided that they have the "CE" marking. It is worth knowing, however, that ultimately the owner or user of the premises is responsible for the quality of the installation. It is up to him to entrust the services to an authorized electric company. One of these companies is IT ELEKTRO AS operating in Oslo and Viken.
