The garbage collection in Oslo will increase by 10%. The direct cause of the increase in prices is last year's bankruptcy of the Veireno company, which dealt with collecting waste. After bankruptcy, the authorities of the Norwegian capital decided to take responsibility for the garbage collection in Oslo.

Increases from next year

According to the municipal waste management services, garbage disposal in Oslo is expected to increase by 8,8% from next year. The bankruptcy of Veireno last year is believed to be the direct cause of the price increase. After this event, the authorities of the capital city took the responsibility of collecting and taking out the rubbish.

- “Our goal was to keep prices as low as possible. However, the assumption of the obligation to collect garbage in Oslo by the capital city authorities and the desire to provide high-quality services have forced an increase in costs, ”says Kjersti Kristoffersen, Communications Director of the Cleaning Department in Oslo, in an interview with Nettavisen.

It is worth adding that this is not the first increase of this type. In 2013-2017, the cost of waste disposal has already increased by a total of NOK 232 per capita.

Garbage collection in Oslo - NOK 104 more

Currently, the inhabitants of the capital pay on average NOK 1 annually. As a result of the increases, from next year each resident will be obliged to pay approximately NOK 104 more for garbage collection in Oslo. People with their own garbage bin will be more affected by the changes, because after the increases they will pay an average of NOK 4 per year for garbage collection in Oslo.

The increases were planned earlier

Initially, prices were planned to increase by 5,5% from next year. However, as a result of the bankruptcy of Veireno and the municipality itself taking over the obligation to dispose of waste, it was decided to increase prices more. Kristoffersen emphasizes that this is not the only factor determining such a size of increases.

- “The budget was established on the basis of the costs that the commune had previously incurred. The situation changed and waste disposal in Oslo became the responsibility of the municipality. However, this solution turned out to be more expensive. The offer was also enriched, including recycling station in Smestad, and soon a new one will be built on Ryen. It is not without significance increase in interest rateswhich led to higher capital costs, ”Kristoffersen told Nettavisen.
