NAV provides sickness benefits for the self-employed in Norway. Certain circumstances must exist for the Office to grant such a benefit. Beneficiaries can be both business people and freelancers. Similar criteria must be met as for employees, but the method of determining the amount of the granted funds differs.

may be granted upon meeting the following conditions:

  • you must be a member of the Norwegian Health System,
  • you must temporarily lose your ability to work as a result of illness or injury,
  • as a rule, you must work at least 4 weeks before applying for sickness benefit,
  • you must show loss of income as a result of illness or injury
  • if you are a freelancer you need to earn regular income.

You must prove your temporary incapacity for work with a certificate issued by a doctor. If you fell ill or suffered an injury related to the skeletal system, you must additionally attach a certificate of illness from a surgeon or physiotherapist. Please note that you must apply for sickness benefit for self-employed workers in Norway at the latest on the sixteenth day after the circumstances temporarily prevent you from working. After this deadline, NAV will no longer award the benefit.

Oral certificate

As a rule, sickness benefit for self-employed workers in Norway must be documented with an appropriate medical certificate. As a rule, such a document will be issued after visiting a doctor. NAV, however, allows some derogation from this rule. If an illness or injury prevents you from attending the consultation, you can do it by phone. The Office accepts the possibility of recognizing such an interview as the beginning of the validity of a medical certificate.

What do you have to do while receiving benefits?

As with workers, self-employed people receiving unemployment benefits must also take whatever steps will enable them to return to work. During this time, you must remain under the constant care of a doctor and undertake the necessary treatment. In a situation where you partially regain the ability to work, you can perform professional activities while reducing the amount of the benefit granted.

If you are on sickness benefit for more than 8 weeks, your doctor must issue you with an extended medical certificate. The document must contain a detailed medical justification why your condition prevents you from returning to business. Otherwise, NAV will refuse any further payment.

How much can you get?

after October 1, it is 65% of the income generated in the conversion period. Before the changes, the amount of the benefit was 75% - this threshold applies to all people who started receiving the benefit before October 1, 2017. In the case of freelancers, sickness benefit is 100% of the previously received remuneration.
