We recently wrote about EU regulations to stop the production of many of the plastic products we use. Member states have a responsibility to engage in this.

Plastic revolution

2021 will bring many changes to the European Union. They will concern the discontinuation of the production of plastic cutlery, plates, sticks, and above all straws, which are the biggest pain. Disposable items are a great threat to our Earth. Their amount that can be found in the waters of the seas and oceans is terrifying. The EU is close to taking this decision. On October 22-25, MEPs will gather on this issue to vote on the bill.

Why is the EU taking such steps?

The above-mentioned four plastic products are actually part and the beginning of the plastic revolution. In the near future, other tools will also be banned, such as: food containers, bags, coffee and fast food containers, as well as drink stirrers. Many people are probably wondering where this change came from and where the idea for this revolution came from, but we do not realize that these products account for over 70 percent of the amount of marine litter. It is mainly marine animals that suffer from this, because it is in their bodies that the amounts of these products are found.

The fight against plastic is not the only war

The European Union has decided to go to war not only with plastic, but also with other waste that poses a serious threat to our Earth. These will include tobacco waste, and above all, filters that contain plastic. The shocking news is that one cigarette end can contaminate as much as 500 to 1000 liters of water. Very often, smokers throwing a cigarette out onto the street put the Earth in great danger, because a cigarette that is thrown out decomposes for as long as 12 years! The EU wants to halve the amount of plastic filters used by 2025, and by 2030% by 80.

Each country is to have a share in this

For some products that are made of plastic, there is no alternative yet. European Union countries are obliged to limit these products in their territories. Mostly the focus is on containers for food, fruit, desserts, vegetables, etc. The aim is also to encourage people to use reusable containers or bags. In addition, countries will be required to ensure that tobacco companies cover all costs related to transportation, collection and treatment of rubbish.
