Due to the risk of forest fires, lighting is generally prohibited in Norway bonfires from April 15 to September 15.

This weekend marks the beginning of the bonfire season, which certainly makes many people happy, according to Bente Lier, secretary general of Norsk Friluftsliv.
– The right to light fires in the forest and fields is an important part of civil rights. As long as we exercise appropriate caution and are aware of the threat of forest fires, we can safely go outside, says Lier.

Even though the general ban on bonfires has been lifted, it is always important to remember that bans may still apply in some areas where rainfall has been low. It is always important to take certain precautions before lighting a fire.
Always make sure it is safe to light a fire in any given location. Pay attention to weather and wind conditions and carefully extinguish fires after yourself. During dry periods with a high risk of forest fires, municipalities may introduce local bans, also in autumn and winter.
Always have appropriate extinguishing agents on hand and ensure that the fire is not too large for you to control
Here are tips for a safe campfire:
- The risk of forest fires and wind conditions must be taken into account.
- The person who lights the fire is always responsible for fire safety.
- An adult and sober person should be responsible for the fire.
- The fire must be located at an appropriate distance from buildings and vegetation.
- No fires are allowed on the coastal rocks.
- The fire may be large enough for you to have control over and be able to extinguish it quickly if necessary.
- It is prohibited to burn plastics, construction materials and other garbage.
- When leaving the fire, it must be completely extinguished.
