Going hunting this fall? On June 1, 2021, the current Weapons Act and the new Weapons Regulation entered into force. If you are not familiar with the currently applicable regulations, you will find here which rules apply to you.

What rules apply?

The Act contains three significant changes compared to previous regulations that apply to hunters:

1. More weapons

According to art. 11 of the Weapons Act hunters can obtain a permit to possess a maximum of eight complete hunting weapons. In the past, the limit was six weapons, so hunters can now go on a hunt with two additional weapons than was previously possible. It is therefore possible to have several different types of weapons for different types of hunting. The condition is registration in the Hunters' Register.
In addition, it is possible, as with the previous rules, to apply for a license for additional weapons if you document a special need.

2. Requirements for a firearm rental permit

Weapons Act it also introduced the requirement to have a permit to borrow weapons. According to art. 18 of the Weapons Act Currently, it is required that anyone borrowing a weapon must have a license for a similar weapon, or possibly a separate "borrowing" permit issued by the police.
However, there are possibilities of the so-called "short-term transfer" of firearms, their parts and ammunition. This can be done provided that the gun owner, permit holder or person acting on his behalf properly supervises the person to whom the gun is being loaned. This applies, for example, to shooting training and training hunting. However, you cannot lend a weapon in this way to a person who has been deprived of a permit or who has grounds to believe that he does not meet the legal requirements regarding character and personal characteristics, in accordance with the provisions of § 16 section weapon act, for. section 18 . The lender is obliged to check this.
Therefore, if you plan to borrow a gun, it is recommended to send a request for permission to borrow a gun to the police well before the start of the hunt. This can be done on the following website: https://www.politiet.no/tjenester/vapen/soke-om-tillatelse-til-vapen/vapen-til-jakt/ .

3. Semi-automatic weapons for hunting

Valid  Weapons Act it also banned many semi-automatic rifles. However, according to § 4-1 of the Weapons Regulations, you can still apply for a license for semi-automatic rifles intended for hunting use. They may have a maximum magazine capacity of ten rounds, have no tab covering the top of the barrel, and have no "pistol grip that remains on the weapon when the stock is removed."  Norwegian hunters association with a new idea.

Penalty for illegal possession of weapons

Infringement Weapons Act may be punished by a fine or imprisonment of up to three months in accordance with art. 39 . However, for more serious crimes, legislation may be applied § 190 i § 191 of the Penal Code, which provides for a more stringent penalty framework.

Here are the most important rules that apply to you if you go hunting now that the new one came into force in June last year Weapons Act. If you own or plan to purchase a firearm, we recommend that you read the Weapons Act i weapons regulations .
