From January 1, 2020, online shopping without VAT will no longer be possible. This solution was proposed by the KrF and was supported by the required parliamentary majority. According to the party's calculations, this will add an additional NOK 750 million to the Norwegian budget.

Online shopping without VAT since 2015

Online shopping without VAT have been possible since 2015. They concerned products purchased outside Norway, the value of which did not exceed NOK 350. The Federation of Entrepreneurs Virke does not hide satisfaction from such a move. “We strove to level the playing field between foreign and Norwegian companies"- says Ivar Horneland Kristensen in an interview with NRK -" We are pleased that KrF and other parties accepted our suggestions, ”he adds.

Fair competition

The director of the Virke organization also emphasizes that tax coverage VAT all products purchased abroad will enable Norwegian companies to compete with such shopping portalslike Alibaba or Wish. As Virke's press release reads, “Fair competition is essential for the preservation of jobs in the retail sector. Currently, it employs over 380 employees".

Online shopping without VAT - what does it look like?

Yet online shopping without VAT are possible for orders with a value not exceeding 350 NOK. This limit was introduced in 2015 and was willingly used by the people of Norway. In 2017 alone, over 15 mln parcels, most of them from China.

Presumably, the lifting of this limit will affect smaller orders via such portals as Alibaba or Aliexpress. At the same time it will affect increase in turnover in native Norwegian trading companies. Especially among those that they sell online. The question is who will benefit more - Norwegian entrepreneurs or consumers?
