– The needs are still huge after an unimaginable tragedy, although a lot of help has also arrived. Norway is now increasing victim support by NOK 100 million, says Foreign Minister Anniken Huitfeldt.
The foreign minister announced today Norway's support at a donor conference in Brussels. The total Norwegian support after the disaster is NOK 350 million.
– Now it is important not to forget about the weakest. Norway increases support for victims by another 100 million NOK. This makes us one of the largest donors after earthquakes, says Huitfeldt.
Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen chaired a donor conference to increase aid to Turkey and Syria after the February 6 earthquakes.

– Norway quickly provided support, sending people and aid to the affected areas. Over 250 million NOK has already been paid to the UN, the Red Cross and Norwegian aid organizations and to send experts and equipment to earthquake-affected areas in Turkey and Syria, says Huitfeldt.
The armed forces also contributed to the transport of rescue equipment and the medical evacuation of the wounded.
“Our partners have contributed a lot of life-saving help. They have to continue it. But we also have to look to the future. We must contribute to people being better able to manage on their own and to care for those who are most vulnerable and exposed to such a situation. Many millions of people were going through very difficult times even before the earthquake, says Huitfeldt.
In Syria, this catastrophe came at the height of a 12-year civil war. For many years, Norway has been one of the country's largest donors of humanitarian aid.
After the disaster, Norway is also helping the Turkish population. Particular emphasis is placed on the most vulnerable post-earthquake victims to provide them with the necessary assistance and protection. More aid is also planned to meet health needs, especially in Turkey.
