Today, Friday, February 21, it has been 83 years since the seated monarch of Norway first saw the light of day. When Duchess Märtha gave birth to him at Skaugum in Asker, a Norwegian prince was born on Norwegian soil for the first time in 567 years.

Harald V came to the throne on the 17th January 1991, after the death of his father. From November 2003 to April 2004 he was undergoing treatment for cancer, during which time the regency was held by his son and heir to the throne, Haakon Magnus Glücksburg. A section of the Antarctic coast was named in his honor - Prince Harald Coast.
