There is a high demand for skilled workers across the country, with many companies looking for apprentices. There has never been more approved companies dealing with apprenticeships, and each year approximately 6000 qualified candidates without an apprenticeship.

– The demand for qualified employees will only increase in the coming years. We are working on various measures to ensure more people complete vocational training. We know that apprenticeships are an important factor in helping students graduate more successfully number of people, but it was not easy for students and companies to find each other, says Education Minister Kari Nessa Nordtun.

Government prioritization of vocational subjects

The government is investing in vocational subjects and intensifying work on providing apprenticeships to anyone who wants to obtain a professional or journeyman certificate. In the state budget proposal for 2024, the government proposes to strengthen the program to a total amount of NOK 485 million.

– It is already clear that the government's prioritization of vocational subjects is bringing results. More than half of all those starting school in... high school chooses vocational subjects. But unfortunately only about half result in a professional or journeyman certificate. So it's no longer just about people applying for admission professional courses. We have to be able to stop these young people, who are motivated to become skilled workers, says Nordtun.

From autumn 2024 will be introduced you also have the right to collect a new professional certificate, even if you already have it or have completed your study qualifications. Then even more people will be able to take vocational subjects, regardless of age and life situation.
