– Solar energy is becoming increasingly important for energy supplies in Europe and around the world. Currently, the world is dependent on China, which accounts for as much as 90% of the market, and this is a particular challenge now that Chinese suppliers have been using dumped prices. If we are to succeed in gaining market share in the solar industry, Europe must commit to European solar production. I am giving the EU a clear signal - Norway can provide the products that Europe needs and has the key expertise, but Europe must also be willing to buy European products, says Industry Minister Jan Christian Vestre.

Europe must also be willing to buy European products

The EU is clear that Europe must become climate neutral by 2050. The Minister for Business and Industry today sent a letter to EU Commissioner Thierry Breton, German Vice-Chancellor Robert Habeck and French Industry Minister Roland Lescure, expressing his desire to develop a common approach to the question of the market photovoltaic industry in Europe and Norway's role at work with solar energy as part of the transformation. The letters were sent before the EU ministerial meeting, the topic of which was the photovoltaic industry.

Norway is considered an important actor in creating the European market

– The fact that Norway was invited to the EU ministerial meeting on the photovoltaic industry shows that Norway is considered an important actor in creating the European market. Norway has been a pioneer in the development of the solar value chain since the 90s and still has players with leading expertise. Norwegian companies are well prepared to supply products to the European market. We have access to zero-emission energy, highly competent work environments and a working life model that facilitates efficient and highly productive business. Norway can thus contribute to the EU's ambition for greater autonomy in the solar value chain, says Vestre.

Norwegian government included the photovoltaic industry as a new area of interest in investment in "Grønt industriløft", and in its state budget proposal for 2024, it strengthened the capital instruments that industrial entities can use.
