In June, 11 people died in a drowning accident. According to Redningsselskapet's drowning statistics, 37 people drowned in Norway in the first half of the year. This is five more than in the same period last year, an increase of 15%.

In June last year, six people died in drowning accidents, while in June 2021, a total of 16 people drowned.
– We encourage everyone who will be at the seaside and water this summer to prepare for swimming, boating or a trip along the river. Enjoy the summer while taking precautions, then the experience will be better and safer for everyone. We have no one to lose, says Grete Herlofson, general secretary of Redningsselskapet.
11 such accidents in June
In June, ten men and one woman killed in Norway in the event of drowning. Four people fell from the boat and there was also a kitesurfing accident. Three people drowned while swimming, two after falling from land and one while free diving.
In the first half of the year, 37 people drowned
So far in 2023, 34 men (92%) and three women have died in drowning incidents in Norway. None drowned child under 16 years of age, but eight people died in the 15-25 age group. There are as many of them as last year.
Most accidents in Rogaland
In the first half of the year, six people died in drowning accidents in Rogaland. Five people drowned in both Møre og Romsdal, Trøndelag and Agder. There were four accidents in Troms and Finnmark, and three drownings in Vestland and Innlandet. Two people drowned in Viken and one person drowned in Oslo, Vestfold and Telemark, Nordland and Svalbard respectively.
Two Norwegian nationals also drowned abroad in the first half of this year. An elderly man fell under the ice in Sweden in March, and a 20-year-old Norwegian woman drowned in June on a beach in South Carolina, USA.
Vigilance can save lives
In June, there were several accidents in which people survived thanks to the quick intervention of those in the vicinity.
“Both children and adults were saved because vigilant people saw the accidents and reacted. Look up this summer and take care of those you are with. Feel free to make sure others around you are also doing well in the water, and remember that drowning happens silently. It's not like the movies, says Tanja Krangnes at Redningsselskapet.
