From January 1 to June 1, 2023, inclusive, there was a nationwide arms amnesty. As part of this action, illegal weapons could be handed over to the police without the risk of punishment. The response was very large, and people provided 18 illegal weapons. These weapons are more than twice as many as during the last amnesty in 653.
The arms amnesty was a great success as people across the country donated illegal weapons, ammunition and explosives. Accidents can happen or weapons can get lost.
– Currently in Norway has 18 fewer illegal weapons. This shows that the amnesty was necessary and right. Illegal weapons pose a serious threat to society, and in the worst case scenario they can fall into the wrong hands and end up in criminal circles, says Minister of Justice and Emergency Preparedness Emilie Enger Mehl.

For comparison, 2017 weapons were handed over during the 8066 amnesty and 2008 weapons during the 13660 amnesty.
Most of the weapons donated were shotguns (7694) and rifles (8142). This represents approximately 85 percent of the weapons donated. In addition, 156 pistols and 37 machine guns were handed over.
Among them are weapons from the Second World War, pistols and other automatic weapons with a high potential for destruction. In addition to other explosives, a bomb launcher was also handed over.
"It's very good that people took advantage of the opportunity to donate weapons that they shouldn't have at home. There are probably many who appreciated the handing over of weapons they may have inherited that were left in attics and basements, says Mehl.
During the arms amnesty, it was possible to supply weapons locally throughout the country. The gun now needs to be checked by Kripos against the gun registry. Then destroy it.
