According to data provided to the Norwegian government, a disproportionate number of Ukrainian refugees continue to arrive.
It is assumed that between 2024 and 25 Ukrainians will come to Norway in 000, the Minister of Justice and Emergency Services said at a press conference on Monday. Emilie Enger Mehl (Sp).
Last year, Sweden accepted 12 refugees and Denmark received 400 asylum applications.
The government is now proposing further austerity measures for Ukrainian refugees. They do it based on a series of measures proposed in December .
– The government believes that we need to tighten the offer and the level of its implementation to control safely influx of refugees. We must avoid a situation where the pressure on municipalities becomes so great that support aid for Ukraine will be questioned, said the Minister of Justice and Emergency Preparedness Emilie Enger Mehl (Sp) in a press note.
Here is the government's proposal:
- Ukrainians will no longer receive financial support if they choose to live privately instead of in an asylum center
- The state will no longer cover the costs of newly arrived animals asylum seekers. In practice, new arrivals will not be able to live in a reception center with animals.
- It will introduce a five-year residence requirement to benefit from free dental services for people aged 19-24 residing in Norway covered by temporary collective protection.
- It will introduce a requirement of residence for 12 months to be entitled to a one-off benefit. The one-off benefit is currently NOK 92 for people without acquired right to parental benefit .
- A longer stay in Norway is required to receive basic and additional benefits. There are currently no requirements for place of residenceto obtain these benefits.
- The introductory allowance for spouses and cohabitants without children is reduced by a total of approximately NOK 6000 per month.
The government will also tighten and define the requirements regarding work adaptation in an introductory program during which Ukrainian refugees learn the Norwegian language and social sciences.
– More refugees need to go to work faster, and we expect that Ukrainians who come to Norway will learn the language quickly and will be able to provide for themselves. At the same time, we will offer those who come job-oriented offers, says Minister of Employment and Social Inclusion Tonje Brenna (AP).
Therefore, the government is also introducing several changes:
- Minimum requirements for work-oriented elements are defined and tightened from fourth month program. On average, at least 15 hours per week should be devoted to work-related activities.
- The minimum requirement can be met through professional experience in the workplace, part-time job, short vocational or industry courses. Means labor market under the auspices of Nav or other similar measures.
- The municipality may also reject applications for the program from people who have job or offer work.
