World food prices have risen

Immediately after the January increase in energy prices in Norway as we wrote earlier, there was also an increase in the prices of food and other products. However, this is natural because Norway is a country that has to buy most of its products from the global market. Therefore, price increases are closely related to the world market.

The Norwegian Central Statistical Office informs

According to the Norwegian Central Statistical Office, the consumer price index (KPI-12-month index) increased by 1,4% in 2020. The consumer price index for food and non-alcoholic beverages increased by 2,8%.

Of the main groups of dairy products, meat, fruits and vegetables, fish, eggs and others. The dairy price index increased the least by 0,6 percent and the most by 4,9 percent. the fruit and vegetable price index increased. In the remaining main groups, the fish consumer price index increased by 3,0%. On the other hand, eggs by 3,1% and meat by 4,7%, and the second group (including baked goods, drinks, etc.) by 1,8%.

The world food price index rose to 113,3 points in January

The FAO Food Price Index, which tracks the monthly movements of international food commodity prices in general circulation and released today, representing a 4,3% increase from December 2020 and the highest level since July 2014.

Sharp declines in global grain stocks are forecast

Global cereal use in 2020/21 is currently forecast at 2 million tonnes, 761 million tonnes more than in the previous season. The leading growth is the strong forage use of coarse grain in China. World wheat and rice use are projected to increase by 52% and 0,7% respectively in the coming year.

World cereal stocks are projected to decline by 2,2% to 801 million tonnes, the lowest level in five years.

. Large purchases of corn by China

World grain trade in 2020/21 is predicted to reach 465,2 million tonnes, a huge increase of 5,7% compared to the record high of the previous season. The elevated estimates reflect China's large maize purchases, especially from the US. International rice trade is forecast to increase even further, by 7,9%, reflecting strong growth in India's exports.
