In the first quarter of this year. The population increased by 7400.
- Last year we witnessed major changes in the development of the population, says adviser Magnus Haug of the Statistics Norway.
Statistics show that in the first three months of the year, 13690 children were born in Norway, almost 700 more than in the same period in 2020.
The birth rate increased for women in all age groups from 29 to 49 years old.
. Nine months later
The increase in births started in December last year - almost exactly nine months after the introduction of the first restrictions. In times of health crises and times of financial uncertainty, birth rates tend to drop, but data so far show that the opposite has happened in Norway, reports the Statistics Norway.
If the trend continues, the downward trend in fertility rates could reverse in 2021.
In addition, statistics show that mortality has also dropped sharply. 10,1 thousand died in the first quarter of the year. People, i.e. 700 less than in the same period last year.
- The decline in mortality and the increase in births resulted in a birth surplus of 3600 in the first quarter. This is the highest increase since 2014, says Haug.

Moving out of the city center
According to Haug, the decline in mortality was especially pronounced among men 90 years of age or older.
Emigration also contributed to the growth of the population.
In most central municipalities in the country, more people have moved in than have moved out, which is very unusual. Examples of this are Bergen, Stavanger and Kristiansand. Oslo stood out among the largest municipalities, with a large increase in the number of emigrants compared to the previous year.
In addition, this year, immigration was much lower due to severe restrictions.
