The Norwegian Medicines Agency is investigating whether there is an association between the two types of heart inflammation with the Pfizer and Moderna vaccine. A total of 18 cases have been reported in Norway.
The Norwegian Medicines Agency has received reports of cases where people who received the Moderna vaccine or the Pfizer vaccine developed heart inflammation. 16 of the cases were related to pericarditis and 2 to myocarditis.
This was said by medical director Steinar Madsen from the Norwegian Medicines Agency.
The Norwegian Medicines Agency is now investigating whether there is a link between the vaccines and the two conditions. The EU Medicines Agency and the US Medicines Agency are also investigating the reported cases.

One more serious case
Pericarditis is a condition in which inflammation occurs and causes fluid to build up. If a lot of fluid is formed it can reduce the heart's pumping ability. The fluid may need to be surgically removed.
Myocarditis is inflammation caused by viruses, bacteria, toxins, or immune responses. The condition may go away without treatment, but according to NHIA heart failure may develop and require treatment.
Madsen says one of the 16 cases of pericarditis was more severe, but he says he is currently on on the right track until recovery.
- People who had these two conditions have recovered or are on their way to recovery at the time we were notified. Fortunately, the conditions themselves do not seem serious in any way, he says.
He states that both men and women of all ages have succumbed to such cases.
Norwegian at the end of April Drug Agency first reported on acute pericarditis and investigated whether there was an association with mRNA vaccines. Until then, seven cases had been reported. They have since received reports of a further nine cases.
Study of the link with vaccines
The Norwegian Medicines Agency says it currently does not know if there is a link between vaccines and disease states.
- We are investigating whether the condition is more common in people who have been vaccinated than in people who have not. The most common cause of getting these two conditions is a viral infection, says Madsen.
