Now is the vacation time and you as the owner of the pet must plan it, also remember that the pet should also be doing well.

Now that it can get hot, remember that pets must have access to water, shade and fresh air

- Having a pet can be great fun, but also comes with a lot of responsibility. You as the owner are responsible for ensuring your pet is properly supervised and cared for throughout the year, including during holidays. Now that it can get hot, you also need to remember that pets must have access to water, shade, and fresh air. It should be especially remembered that the temperature in a parked car can quickly rise to a dangerous level - says Olaug Bollestad, Minister of Agriculture and Food.

Even in partial shade and shade, the temperature in the car can be high

It can get very hot in cars. Even in partial shade and shade, the temperature can be high. Every year, dogs left in the car overheat. This can cause great suffering and, in the worst case scenario, death. Signs of severe overheating may be heavy panting, instability, confusion of the animal, dryness and redness of the mucous membranes of the eyes and mouth, and possible fainting. If you see an animal trapped in a hot car, you should quickly try to find the owner. If this is not possible, you should contact the police. Emergency assistance may consist in cooling the animal with not very cold water. Thereafter, the animal should be supervised by a veterinarian who can provide further treatment.

If you are unable or unwilling to take your pet with you, you can ask someone else to look after your pet

It is not allowed to travel without proper supervision of the animals, food and water while you are away. If you cannot or do not want to take your pet with you, you can ask someone else to look after your pet while you are away or book a place for your pet at an animal boarding house. It is unacceptable and illegal to leave or abandon a pet to make it homeless / ownerless.

Children under the age of 16 cannot be independently responsible for pets

Remember that in accordance with the Animal Welfare Act children under 16 years of age they cannot be responsible for animals on their own. Therefore, it is the parents or other adults who have the overall responsibility to ensure that the pet receives appropriate supervision, whether it is a family pet or a child is caring for others.

Electronically microchip your pet before going on vacation

There is no requirement to mark the identity of pets that only stay in Norway, but both the Norwegian Food Safety Authority and the Ministry continue to recommend that you have such a label before going on holiday. If someone goes on vacation and the pet accidentally escapes, it ensures safe and quick identification of the pet and owner by scanning.

Dogs and cats are most often marked with an electronic microchip

Marking must be performed by a veterinarian. Both dogs and cats are most often marked with an electronic microchip, which is placed under the animal's skin and which, when scanned, ensures safe and quick identification of the animal and its owner. Microprocessor readings can be made in several places, incl. at a vet, at police offices and at customs. In addition, many rescue centers and dog clubs have their own readers.
