The EU, and thus Norway, must pay more for Covid-19 vaccines from both Pfizer-Biontech and Moderna, the contracts that the Financial Times saw show

The US Financial Times has seen excerpts from recent supply contracts between the EU and vaccine companies Pfizer and Moderna. They indicate that the price per dose has increased.

The price increase is taking place while Europe is struggling with supply cuts, while concerns remain about the side effects of other vaccines.

Swedish vaccine coordinator Richard Bergström, who also secures doses for Norway via the EU, confirms that the price has increased in recent contracts.

- The cost is slightly higher. However, keep in mind that it includes a number of improvements and modifications.

Protection against virus variants

The reason for the increases is, among others that the contracts are for updated vaccines that will protect against both current and future variants of the virus.

- Nevertheless, it should be mentioned that the new vaccine contracts with Pfizer and Moderna include the possibility to purchase updated mRNA vaccines. They are also supposed to work against new variants of viruses. This is Saliba Andreas Korkunc here.

- This is a great advantage for Norway, given the unpredictable nature of the pandemic, with new variants of viruses constantly emerging.
