"People who have been vaccinated with Pfizer will likely need a third dose in twelve months to regain full immunity," said CNBC CEO Albert Bourla.

He also says it is possible that people will have to get vaccinated against the virus every year.

The company reports earlier this month that recent studies show the vaccine is still working well after six months. The study was conducted on 12 people.

However, new studies are needed to see if the vaccine also provides protection after this time.

2 doses are enough

"We believe people are fully vaccinated when they received 2 doses of the vaccine from BioNTech / Pfizer," says chief physician Sara Viksmoen Watle at FHI.

It notes that pre-approval clinical trials have shown a high degree of protection against COVID-19, and complementary studies, including from Israel, support these findings.

- There are also studies from the UK that show good protection against more serious diseases in the elderly after the first dose. Studies from several countries also show that there is good protection against infection, both with and without symptoms, after both the first and second doses.

– Possible dose of refreshment

Wiksmoen Vatle believes Pfizer's statement indicates that it may be appropriate in the long run to administer a refreshing dose to people who have previously been fully vaccinatedas your immunity will weaken over time.

When it matters, it's too early to say it now, but research is ongoing to find out where the immune response lasts and how good you get with a third dose of the same vaccine or one that is more targeted at newer ones variants of the virus.
