It can be tempting to rebuild your car to become a mobile workshop, a place to sleep, or otherwise customize it for what you want to use it for. What can be converted and changed in the car and what legal consequences does such an interference have? You can do this - but you must obey the rules so that the car does not become unsafe to drive and endanger other road users.
When you rebuild a car, you change its technical data, e.g. appearance, engine parameters, driving properties, etc., then it will not be the same as when you registered it for use.
What to do if you are planning a vehicle or car conversion?
If you are planning a vehicle or car conversion, contact one of the vehicle inspection stations State Highways Authority. There you will get any advice on what you can do and what the requirements apply. Conversion may cause the car's driving characteristics to change. Driving it can become dangerous. There are strict rules about what you can do, because any conversion is or can be a major interference with the factory construction of the vehicle.
For example, your rebuild may include the following:
- engine power change (so-called "chip tuning" or trimming)
- changing the vehicle group, for example from a van to a passenger car
- technical data such as axle loads, total weight or raised / lowered chassis
– changing the fuel used by the car, for example from petrol to gas, diesel or electricity
- equipping the car with, for example, work equipment or equipment for living in it. In this case, the weight of the vehicle determines whether the toll group for the vehicle changes
- the use of rims or tires with dimensions that do not comply with the technical data of the vehicle manufacturer.
Re-approval after conversion by the Statens vegvesen vehicle inspection station
You will find a lot of information about technical data in the vehicle's registration certificate or owner's manual. A vehicle or car that has been rebuilt must stay re-approved by one of the vehicle inspection stations Statens vegvesen. You can order an approval date on the Statens vegvesen website.
